Artefact is a small scale Verdejo project rooted in La Seca, the historic heartland of quality Verdejo within Rueda. The focus is on old bush trained vineyards planted on the classic plateau soils of sand, gravel and limestone that pre date the industrial transformation of the region. The project was established to explore a more serious, site led expression of Verdejo, closer to its original identity before high yields, aromatic yeasts and technological winemaking became dominant. Farming is attentive and low yielding, with an emphasis on early picking, phenolic maturity and preserving acidity in a warm continental climate defined by hot days and sharply cool nights.
Verdejo Blanc 2024 comes from old vine parcels on free draining sandy soils that naturally moderate vigour and retain freshness. La Seca’s elevation and diurnal range play a key role in shaping the wine, allowing slow ripening and aromatic definition despite the heat of the growing season. The 2024 vintage delivered healthy fruit with clear tension, producing a wine that is dry, savoury and mineral rather than overtly aromatic. Notes lean towards citrus peel, green almond, fennel and a lightly phenolic grip, with a saline edge that reflects both soil and restrained handling.
