Steve Matthiasson is a Napa Valley grower and winemaker recognised for a deliberately restrained, vineyard led philosophy that prioritises balance, freshness and site transparency over the region’s more typical concentration driven style. Alongside Jill Matthiasson, he farms and sources from a network of organic and dry farmed vineyards across Napa and Sonoma, often working with varieties and techniques that sit outside the conventional Napa canon. His approach consistently focuses on natural acidity, moderate alcohol and minimal cellar intervention, with a strong emphasis on expressing vineyard character with precision rather than winemaking imprint.

The Ribolla is a more unusual component of the Matthiasson range, made from Ribolla Gialla, a northern Italian variety most closely associated with Friuli Venezia Giulia, here planted in select cooler sites in California where it can retain its naturally high acidity and textural clarity. The 2022 vintage in California delivered generally warm conditions, but careful site selection and early picking decisions were key in preserving freshness in aromatic white varieties. In this cuvée, Ribolla is handled in a way that emphasises its natural tension and subtle phenolic structure, showing citrus peel, green apple and pear alongside white floral notes and a faint waxy, textural edge. The palate is linear and gently grippy, with bright acidity and a dry, mineral finish that reflects both the grape’s natural profile and Matthiasson’s restrained winemaking approach.
