Steve Matthiasson is a Napa Valley grower and winemaker known for a distinctly restrained, site focused approach that contrasts with the region’s more opulent stylistic norm. Alongside Jill Matthiasson, he farms a range of organically and dry farmed vineyards across Napa and neighbouring Sonoma, working primarily with trusted growers who share a low input philosophy. His reputation has been built on championing balance in Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, with an emphasis on moderate alcohol, natural acidity and vineyard transparency rather than extraction or heavy oak influence. Across both estate and sourced fruit, the aim is to highlight the nuance of site and season through careful harvesting decisions and gentle cellar work.
The Napa Cabernet is a regional blend sourced from a selection of vineyard sites across Napa Valley, combining fruit from cooler benchland and hillside parcels to balance ripeness with structure and freshness. The 2021 vintage in Napa was generally low yielding and naturally concentrated, producing wines with firm tannins, good acidity and clear fruit definition. In this expression, Cabernet Sauvignon is supported by small amounts of traditional blending varieties depending on vintage, contributing aromatic lift and structural detail. The wine shows blackcurrant, cassis and ripe blackberry, with violet florals, cedar and subtle herbal undertones. The palate is focused and medium weighted for Napa Cabernet, with fine tannins, fresh acidity and a long, linear finish that reflects Matthiasson’s restrained stylistic intent.
