Mazoyeres-Chambertin Gran Cru, Domaine Tawse 2022
Marchand-Tawse
Domaine Tawse is a Beaune based Burgundy estate founded in 2006 by Canadian entrepreneur Moray Tawse, who built the domaine through the acquisition of high quality vineyard holdings across both the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. The project was established with the ambition of operating at the top tier of Burgundy, assembling an extensive range of Premier and Grand Cru sites across appellations including Gevrey Chambertin, Chambolle Musigny, Nuits Saint Georges, Volnay, Meursault, Puligny Montrachet and Beaune. From the outset, the philosophy has centred on precision viticulture, with organic and biodynamic principles applied throughout the vineyards alongside strict yield control, rigorous sorting and highly selective harvesting. Winemaking is overseen by Pascal Marchand, whose influence brings a disciplined, low intervention approach shaped by his long experience in Burgundy, favouring careful extraction and long élevage in French oak to preserve clarity, depth and site expression across the range.
Mazoyères Chambertin is a Grand Cru vineyard in Gevrey Chambertin that is legally entitled to be labelled as Charmes Chambertin, though wines from Mazoyères itself tend to be rarer and often slightly more structured and less immediately expressive than the broader Charmes designation. The site sits on deep limestone and clay soils on the lower to mid slope, producing Pinot Noir with both power and breadth, combined with a darker, more brooding fruit profile than many neighbouring Grand Crus. In Tawse’s hands, the fruit is carefully selected and vinified with controlled extraction to manage the natural intensity of the site while preserving aromatic detail and precision. Elevage takes place in French oak barrels with a measured proportion of new oak, supporting structure and integration without dominating the wine. The wine shows dark cherry, blackberry and black raspberry, with violet florals, spice, and a pronounced mineral, earthy backbone. The palate is concentrated and layered, with firm but polished tannins, fresh acidity and a long, powerful finish that reflects both the depth of Mazoyères Chambertin and the disciplined, detail driven approach of the domaine.
