Beaune 1er Cru Clos du Roi, Domaine Tawse 2022
Marchand-Tawse
Domaine Tawse is a Beaune based Burgundy estate founded in 2006 by Canadian entrepreneur Moray Tawse, who built the domaine through the acquisition of high quality vineyard holdings across both the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. The project was established with the ambition of operating at the top tier of Burgundy, assembling an extensive range of Premier and Grand Cru sites across appellations including Gevrey Chambertin, Chambolle Musigny, Nuits Saint Georges, Volnay, Meursault, Puligny Montrachet and Beaune. From the outset, the philosophy has centred on precision viticulture, with organic and biodynamic principles applied throughout the vineyards alongside strict yield control, rigorous sorting and highly selective harvesting. Winemaking is overseen by Pascal Marchand, whose influence brings a disciplined, low intervention approach shaped by his long experience in Burgundy, favouring whole berry fermentation where appropriate, gentle extraction and long élevage in French oak to preserve clarity, structure and site expression across the range.
Beaune 1er Cru Clos du Roi is one of the most highly regarded Premier Cru sites of Beaune, located on well exposed mid slope vineyards where limestone rich soils with clay influence produce wines of both depth and refinement. The climat is known for delivering a more structured and serious expression of Beaune, often with greater density and ageing potential than many neighbouring sites, while still retaining the red fruited perfume and approachability typical of the appellation. In Tawse’s hands, the fruit is carefully selected and vinified with controlled extraction to maintain precision and avoid excess weight, allowing the natural structure of the vineyard to integrate with purity of fruit. Elevage takes place in French oak barrels with a restrained proportion of new oak, supporting balance and integration without overshadowing site character. The wine shows red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry, with violet florals, subtle spice and a fine mineral, slightly earthy edge. The palate is structured yet elegant, with fine tannins, fresh acidity and a long, composed finish that reflects both the stature of Clos du Roi and the precise, restrained style of the domaine.
