Santenay Rouge 1er Cru Grand Clos Rousseau, Domaine Thomas Morey
Domaine Thomas Morey
Domaine Thomas Morey is a family owned estate based in Chassagne Montrachet, representing the modern evolution of one of Burgundy’s most respected winegrowing families. Thomas Morey established his domaine in 2007 after working alongside his father at Domaine Bernard Morey, choosing to focus on meticulous parcel selection and precise vineyard farming across Chassagne Montrachet, Saint Aubin and surrounding appellations. The estate is known for its rigorous attention to detail in the vineyard, with sustainable viticulture and careful soil management aimed at preserving balance and site transparency. In the cellar, Thomas Morey employs a restrained approach, using indigenous fermentations, measured oak influence and long élevage to emphasise purity, texture and the structural identity of each climat.
Santenay 1er Cru Grand Clos Rousseau is a Pinot Noir sourced from one of the most highly regarded Premier Cru sites in Santenay, located on well exposed limestone and marl rich slopes that produce structured yet refined red wines. The vineyard benefits from a combination of good drainage, south and southeast exposures and clay limestone soils that lend both ripeness and backbone to the fruit. Vines are farmed with low yields and careful canopy management to ensure balanced phenolic maturity. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, often incorporating partial whole cluster inclusion to enhance aromatic lift and structural definition. Élevage is carried out in French oak barrels with a measured proportion of new oak, supporting the wine’s frame without dominating its expression. The wine shows layers of red cherry, wild strawberry and blackcurrant leaf alongside floral notes, subtle spice and a distinct mineral undertone. The palate is finely structured, with firm yet polished tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish that reflects the depth and class of this Premier Cru site.
