Jade Gross was born in Hong Kong and began her career as a chef, working at Mugaritz where she led the R&D team before turning to wine. After studying in Paris and London, she moved to Rioja in 2018, apprenticing under Abel Mendoza and Maite Fernández in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Her cellar is based in San Vicente, working mainly with high altitude, old bush vine parcels in Rioja Alta and Alavesa on clay limestone soils. Farming is organic and minimal intervention, fermentations are spontaneous, often with whole bunches, and élevage takes place in used barrels or concrete to preserve clarity. Her aim is to express the landscape through restrained, site driven wines that move away from oak dominated Rioja typicity.

Piano Piano 2023 is a field blend of Tempranillo, Graciano, and Viura from vineyards around San Vicente at 550 to 650 metres, rooted in shallow calcareous soils overlooking the Ebro River. The 2023 vintage produced bright, balanced fruit with moderate alcohol and fine phenolic texture. Grapes were co fermented with 20% whole clusters, macerated gently for two weeks, and aged in concrete and large foudres for ten months. It is a supple, fragrant red, combining redcurrant, plum skin, and graphite notes with a savoury, saline edge, showing the elegance and lift of the higher Rioja Alavesa sites.
