Aurelj Vaira is an independent project founded in 2019 by brothers Francesco and Giacomo Vaira in the village of Vergne, located between Barolo, La Morra, and Narzole in the Langhe hills of Piedmont. The estate spans approximately 4.35 hectares and was created to honour their late father, Aurelio, with “Aurelj” reflecting the local dialect. Francesco and Giacomo manage all vineyard work themselves, focusing on low yields, manual labour, and organic practices with a growing commitment to biodynamic principles. In the cellar, fermentations occur spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, ageing is conducted in large neutral botti, cement, or used oak, and minimal sulphur is employed. No fining or filtration is applied, allowing the wines to express site, vintage, and varietal character naturally. The project represents a younger, freer vision of Langhe viticulture, distinct from other historic family estates in the region.

Controcorrente 2022 is a Langhe Nebbiolo sourced from young vines across Vergne and the northern edge of Barolo. These clay and marl soils at 400–450 metres elevation provide a bright, fresh profile. The 2022 vintage was cooler than average, giving lifted floral aromatics and a precise structure. Grapes were hand harvested, fermented spontaneously in concrete, and aged eight months in neutral oak. The wine shows raspberry, rose petal, and dried herb aromas with fine tannins and a fresh, saline finish.
