Piero Busso’s estate began in 1953 when his father purchased vineyards in Neive, gradually assembling parcels in some of the area’s most respected crus including Albesani, Gallina and the south west facing Bricco Mondino in the Balluri zone. The estate remains entirely family run, with Piero and his children managing every aspect of vineyard work and cellar decisions, always prioritising respect for the land. The family farms without herbicides and keeps yields naturally low, working with indigenous yeasts and long macerations before ageing in large Slavonian botti that protect the delicacy of Nebbiolo from overt oak influence. The aim is to express the individual personality of each hillside rather than a fixed style.
Barbaresco Mondino 2021 comes from the steep and airy Bricco Mondino vineyard in Balluri, a site defined by calcareous sandy soils that give Barbaresco with lift, perfume and fine structured tannins. The 2021 season in this part of Neive was marked by a cool spring, excellent flowering, warm but ventilated summer conditions and a September that favoured slow, even ripening. Grapes were harvested by hand into small crates, destemmed, fermented with native yeasts and macerated for several weeks before ageing for eighteen months in large old botti. The wine shows red cherry, raspberry, rose petal and a clean mineral line, with tannins that are firm yet polished and a finish that carries the hallmark brightness of this hillside.
