Mas de Libian is a longstanding family domaine in the southern Rhône, run by the Thibon family since 1670 and certified biodynamic since the early 2000s. Today, Hélène Thibon leads the winemaking with her sister Catherine managing the vineyards and gardens. The estate lies on the terraced stony slopes near Saint Marcel d'Ardèche where a mix of galets roulés, clay and sand support old vines and deep rooted biodiversity. Their approach is resolutely traditional and hands off, with everything harvested by hand, ferments wild, and no chemical inputs used in vineyard or cellar. Horses are still used to plough and the wines are joyful, nourishing expressions of the land.

Bout d’Zan is their signature red, named after the family’s black cat and made primarily from Grenache and Syrah. The 2023 vintage was warm and steady with cool nights that helped retain acidity and aromatic lift. The grapes were destemmed and gently fermented with indigenous yeasts before ageing in concrete vats to preserve brightness and energy. The wine is unfined and barely filtered with minimal sulphur at bottling. Juicy and inviting, it bursts with black cherry, plum skin, thyme and a dusting of peppery spice. There is a wild garrigue edge but also balance and freshness that make this far more than your average Côtes du Rhône, vibrant, soulful and unpretentious.
