Domaine aux Moines is one of the defining estates of Savennières, rooted in the historic Roche aux Moines hillside, a former monastic vineyard long recognised as one of the appellation’s great crus. Under the long stewardship of Monique Laroche, and now her daughter Tessa Laroche, the domaine has evolved with quiet conviction. Farming has been fully organic for many years, with elements of biodynamic practice, and the cellar work has moved steadily towards lower intervention. The aim has never been to chase power, but to reveal the singular microclimate and schist rich soils of Roche aux Moines through Chenin Blanc of depth, tension and longevity.
Roche aux Moines 2023 comes from steep south facing slopes overlooking the Loire, where shallow schist soils and strong ventilation naturally limit yields and preserve acidity. The vintage delivered ripe fruit with clarity rather than excess, allowing Chenin to express both breadth and line. The wine is luminous and layered, with golden fruit tones, dry honeyed nuance and a deep mineral spine. High natural acidity is fully woven into the structure, giving a sense of power held in reserve, simultaneously mouth filling and tensile, with a long, resonant finish built for extended ageing.
