Henri Le Roy is a former biologist and geneticist from Paris who had a career change in the early 2000's and began making wine in Jura . Inspired by the wines of Burgundy, he travelled to Beaune to study oenology and later decided to set up his winery in the rolling hills of Southern Jura, where access to top vineyard sites is a little easier than Burgundy! He farms 3-5 hectares of vines around the villages of Grusse and Vincelles (also known as Val Sonette). This south part of the Jura wine region is home to famous names such as Ganavet, Miroirs and Labet. Henri’s best site is called ‘Vernambaud’, this is the magical plot just outside the village of Grusse. Here there are two isolated parcels of vines surrounded by forest, one is a very well-known vineyard belonging to Kenjiro Kagami of Domaine Miroirs, the other is Henri’s. The soils here are rich in blue marl and the site is known for its low yields.

From the Bâtard Vernambaud lieu dit just outside Grusse in the southern Jura, this Chardonnay comes from a S to SE facing slope of blue and grey marls with limestone. Naturally low yielding, the site brings density and mineral intensity. Made in the ouillé style, the wine shows citrus peel, crushed stone and subtle savoury notes, with a saline core, fine phenolic grip and a long, precise finish that reflects both site and season.
