Riesling Les Grandes Lignes, Domaine Leon Boesch 2024
Domaine Leon Boesch
Domaine Léon Boesch is a long established family estate in the Vallée Noble in Westhalten, at the foot of the Vosges mountains in Alsace. The domaine has been in the Boesch family for generations, but its modern identity is defined by a decisive shift toward biodynamic viticulture under Adrien and Olivier Boesch. Their work has positioned the estate among the more serious, terroir driven producers in Alsace, with a strong focus on soil life, ecological balance and precise site expression across steep hillside vineyards. The vineyards are planted on a complex geological patchwork of limestone, marl, sandstone and volcanic influenced subsoils, shaped by colluvial deposits rolling down from the Vosges. This combination of altitude, shelter from excessive rainfall and strong diurnal range gives a natural framework for Riesling defined by tension, aromatic clarity and long ageing potential. In the cellar, the approach is deliberately restrained, relying on indigenous fermentations, extended lees contact and very low sulphur use to preserve structural detail rather than stylistic imprint.
Riesling Les Grandes Lignes is a single vineyard expression from a high elevation hillside parcel in Westhalten, situated on limestone rich slopes where thin topsoils force deep rooting and naturally restrict vigour. The site is exposed to cool night air descending from the Vosges, which preserves acidity and extends the growing season, allowing Riesling to develop full phenolic maturity without loss of tension. Farming is carried out biodynamically, with meticulous canopy management and yield control to ensure concentration and aromatic precision. Harvest is manual and selective, followed by spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Elevage takes place in neutral vessels with extended time on fine lees, building a layered, textural dimension without diminishing the wine’s linear core. The wine shows a striking interplay of citrus oil, lime zest and green apple alongside white flowers, crushed herbs and wet stone. On the palate it is tightly coiled yet expansive, with a saline mineral drive, fine phenolic grip and a long, mouthwatering finish that reflects the limestone backbone and altitude of the Vallée Noble terroir.
