Hautes Côtes de Beaune Puits de Chaux, Clair Obscur 2023
Domaine Clair Obscur
Clair Obscur is the deeply personal project of Pierre and Jennifer Clair, a husband and wife team whose experience places them at the heart of Burgundy’s modern biodynamic movement. Pierre has spent much of his career as chef de culture at two of the region’s most influential domaines, first at Domaine de Montille and later at Domaine Marquis d’Angerville, estates widely recognised for their pioneering work in biodynamic viticulture. Drawing on decades of vineyard experience, Pierre oversees the family’s meticulously farmed parcels, while Jennifer leads the work in the cellar. Beginning with just 0.4 hectares of family owned vines in Corpeau, the domaine has gradually expanded through the acquisition of parcels in Maranges, Santenay, Beaune and the Hautes Côtes. Together they produce wines of remarkable honesty and energy, combining rigorous biodynamic farming with an intuitive, low intervention approach that allows each site to speak clearly.
Hautes Côtes de Beaune Puits de Chaux is sourced from higher altitude vineyards above the Côte de Beaune, where cooler temperatures and limestone rich, stony soils deliver wines of natural freshness and tension. The Pinot Noir is grown in biodynamically farmed parcels that prioritise soil vitality and balance, with careful canopy management to ensure slow, even ripening. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in wooden vats, often incorporating a proportion of whole clusters to enhance aromatic lift and structure. Élevage is carried out in older Burgundian barrels, allowing the wine to retain its pure, transparent expression of site while gaining subtle texture and depth. This is succulent and quite sensual, the fruit coats the palate, the tannins are very fine and frame it nicely, it’s clear and precise, with cherries, wild berries and touch of smoke and earth. It is rare to find red burgundies that give so much pleasure in their youth while ageing gracefully.
