Massa Vecchia is a pioneering natural wine estate in Tuscany’s Alta Maremma, founded in 1985 by Fabrizio Niccolaini. From the outset, the estate rejected industrial practices in favor of organic farming, later adopting full biodynamics by 2004. Located on limestone soils near Massa Marittima, the six hectare estate, now run by Fabrizio’s daughter Francesca Sarti, focuses on indigenous varieties like Sangiovese, Trebbiano, and Aleatico. All wines are made with native yeasts, extended maceration, no filtration, and minimal or no sulfur. With a strong sense of place and a minimalist approach, Massa Vecchia remains one of Italy’s most respected voices in natural winemaking.

The Sangiovese 2021 is sourced primarily from the Beruzzo vineyard, planted at ~300 meters on clay-limestone soils. Grapes are destemmed, fermented with native yeasts in open-top wooden vats, and macerated for approximately 35 days. Aging occurs in old tonneaux for 18 months before bottling without fining or filtration; sulfur additions are minimal (<20 mg/L).

The wine shows classic varietal structure; red cherry, dried herbs, iron, underpinned by firm acidity and a mineral backbone. Linear, elegant, and built to evolve.
