Somewhere On Another Hill Sauvignon, Jauma 2022
Jauma
Jauma is the project of James Erskine, one of the pioneers of natural wine in Australia. Based in McLaren Vale, South Australia, James works with dry-farmed organic vineyards planted on ancient soils, with a strong focus on regenerative agriculture and community. Since the early 2010s, Jauma has become known for joyful, transparent wines that reflect site, climate and vintage with absolute honesty. His style is intuitive and gentle, relying on native yeasts, no additions and élevage in old wood or stainless steel. Everything is harvested by hand and handled with care, from vineyard to bottle.
Somewhere on Another Hill is James’s take on Sauvignon Blanc, sourced from a high elevation vineyard in the Adelaide Hills with quartz-rich clay soils. The cooler climate and altitude preserve acidity while encouraging gentle ripening and aromatic complexity. In 2022, a slow growing season allowed great depth to form without excess ripeness. Whole bunch pressed and fermented wild in stainless steel, the wine was then left on lees for several months before bottling with no additions. This is a subtle and savoury Sauvignon, with lime skin, green tea, chamomile and crushed rock. Calm and focused, with gentle breadth and energy.
