Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel, Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm 2020
Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm
Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the defining estates of the Middle Mosel, internationally recognised for producing benchmark Riesling from steep blue slate vineyards with exceptional precision and longevity. The estate has remained family run for generations and is renowned for a deeply traditional, site driven philosophy that prioritises terroir expression over winemaking influence. Its vineyards are concentrated around Wehlen, Graach and Bernkastel, where Devonian slate soils dominate and create ideal conditions for slow ripening in a cool continental climate while preserving piercing natural acidity. Viticulture is extremely selective and labour intensive, with multiple hand harvesting passes to separate fruit by ripeness and botrytis influence. In the cellar, fermentation is spontaneous and extremely slow, taking place in traditional large oak Fuder casks with extended lees ageing and minimal intervention to preserve clarity, finesse and aromatic purity.
Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Goldkapsel is sourced from one of the Mosel’s most revered steep vineyards, a south west facing slope above Wehlen defined by deep blue slate and an extraordinary capacity to produce wines of both delicacy and concentration. The Goldkapsel designation indicates a highly selective Auslese, typically drawn from the ripest and most botrytised berries within the harvest, resulting in greater intensity, depth and aromatic complexity than the standard Auslese bottling. Fruit is hand selected in multiple passes, ensuring only perfectly developed, often noble rot affected grapes are included. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in traditional Mosel Fuder casks and proceeds at an exceptionally slow pace over many months, a defining feature of the Prüm style that allows residual sugar, acidity and aromatic intensity to integrate with remarkable harmony. The wine is densely layered yet weightless in feel, showing ripe apricot, peach and candied citrus alongside honey, white flowers, smoke and finely etched slate minerality. The palate is opulent yet precise, with a striking balance between rich sweetness and electric acidity, leading to a long, saline, mineral finish that captures the grandeur and finesse of Wehlener Sonnenuhr in its most concentrated Auslese expression.
