Bourgogne Rouge Les Grands Chaillots, Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair
Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair
Thibault Liger-Belair took over the family domaine in 2001, re-establishing a historic Nuits-Saint-Georges estate whose roots trace back several generations within one of Burgundy’s most recognised families. While distinct from the Vosne-Romanée branch of the Liger-Belair lineage, Thibault has built his domaine with a clear, independent identity, steadily expanding holdings through both inheritance and carefully selected parcels. Today the estate spans key sites across the Côte de Nuits and Beaujolais, reflecting his dual focus on Pinot Noir and Gamay, and his interest in expressing site across different terroirs. He farms organically, with biodynamic principles increasingly informing vineyard work, and places strong emphasis on vine health, soil vitality, and precise harvest timing. In the cellar, his approach is deliberate and restrained, often incorporating whole bunch fermentation, favouring gentle extraction, and adapting élevage to each cuvée to balance structure with clarity of fruit and terroir expression.
Les Grands Chaillots is a Bourgogne Rouge sourced from parcels on the edge of the Côte de Nuits, where limestone rich soils with scattered clay and stone give a balance of freshness and mid palate density. The site is treated with the same attention as more elevated appellations, with careful sorting and a proportion of whole bunch fermentation used to build aromatic lift and subtle structure. Extraction is kept gentle to preserve purity, and élevage in barrel is relatively discreet with a limited proportion of new oak. The wine shows bright red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, interwoven with floral notes, gentle spice and a fine mineral thread. The palate is supple yet focused, with fine tannins and a clean, lightly saline finish that reflects both the clarity of the vintage style and the limestone influence of the terroir.
