Fabrizio Iuli runs his family estate in Montaldo di Cerrina, in Piedmont's Monferrato hills, where he has built a reputation for producing characterful wines with minimal intervention. Although the region is better known for Barbera and Nebbiolo, Fabrizio has long been fascinated by Burgundy, planting a hectare of Pinot Noir in 1999 to explore what the variety could achieve on Piedmontese soils. The estate farms organically, working with indigenous yeasts and a restrained approach in the cellar. Its vineyards are spread across the surrounding hills, where calcareous clay soils provide the freshness and mineral character that Fabrizio seeks in his wines. The philosophy is refreshingly straightforward: elegant, vibrant wines with plenty of personality, without unnecessary extraction or embellishment.
Nino is Fabrizio's playful interpretation of Pinot Noir, combining delicate red fruit and floral aromatics with subtle spice and mineral notes. Fruit from the Arioli vineyard is fermented spontaneously in stainless steel, with 10 to 12 days of skin maceration before malolactic fermentation in oak. The wine then spends 16 months ageing in large oak casks, followed by six months in bottle. Bottled without fining or filtration, it retains a fresh, expressive character, with supple tannins, lively acidity and a persistent, fruit driven finish. Delicate rather than powerful, this is a distinctly Piedmontese take on Pinot Noir that prioritises freshness and drinkability over weight.
