Domaine Belargus was created by Ivan Massonnat to revive and celebrate the historic crus of Anjou Noir, assembling an extraordinary collection of monopoles and terroirs once prized by the region’s greatest growers. The domaine centres on Chenin grown in the schist, quartz and volcanic soils that shape the hillsides of Savennières, Quarts de Chaume and the Layon valley. The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, with meticulous canopy management, low yields and detailed parcel by parcel harvesting. Vinifications rely on indigenous yeasts, gentle pressing and patient ageing in large neutral vessels to reveal precision, tension and the layered mineral expression that Chenin achieves on these ancient slopes.
Anjou Treilles Monopole 2021 comes from one of the steepest and most dramatic sites in the region, a south facing amphitheatre rising sharply above the Layon. The 2021 season was cool and demanding, marked by early spring frost and a long, slow ripening that limited yields but produced fruit of remarkable purity. Harvesting took place entirely by hand in multiple passes to capture optimal balance in each section of the slope. Fermentation occurred with native yeasts in large older barrels followed by extended ageing on fine lees to build texture without losing the natural drive of the site. The wine is vertical, saline and tightly coiled, shaped by citrus, crushed stone, white flowers and a long graphite lined finish.
