Clos Fantine is run by the Andrieu siblings Carole, Corinne and Olivier, who inherited their family’s vines in the hills of Faugères in the late 1990s. From the outset they embraced organic farming and a low intervention approach, working without sulphur, filtration or additives in the cellar. Their 30 hectares of vines lie on rugged schist soils at high altitude in the Languedoc, surrounded by garrigue and wild forest. The climate is Mediterranean but tempered by cool winds and high diurnal range which brings balance and freshness to the grapes. The domaine has gained cult status over the years for its purity of fruit, authenticity and refusal to compromise.
The 2020 Faugères Tradition is a blend of Carignan, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre from old vines, fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in concrete. Each variety is vinified separately and blended just before bottling. No sulphur is used at any stage. The vintage was dry but not excessively hot, producing concentrated fruit with good acidity and lift. The wine is wild yet composed with notes of black olive, plum skin, dried thyme and graphite. Structured but fluid, it offers a deep connection to place with the aromatic density of the garrigue and the savoury stamp of Faugères schist. A wine that feels alive, vibrant and completely untamed.
