Família Nin Ortiz - the Soul of Modern Priorat

Família Nin Ortiz - the Soul of Modern Priorat

This week’s newsletter takes us to the rugged hills of Priorat, where we explore the region’s remarkable revival and the quiet brilliance of Família Nin-Ortiz, one of its defining modern voices.

Tucked into the steep, terraced slopes of southern Catalonia, Priorat is defined by its black llicorella slate soils and centuries of monastic viticulture. Revived in the 1980s by a handful of visionary growers, the region once again produces some of Spain’s most complex and ageworthy wines.

Founded in 2002 by Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz, Nin Ortiz stands at the forefront Priorat, using biodynamic farming to craft site-driven wines that capture the purity and quiet intensity of these ancient hills.

Ester, originally from Penedès, trained in biology before joining Mas Martinet in Priorat, where she worked alongside Sara Pérez and honed her vineyard expertise. Meeting Carles Ortiz, who was restoring ancient terraces in Porrera, led to a shared project focused on old vines and minimal intervention, combining their complementary skills

to express the character and purity of the region’s vineyards.

Farming is fully biodynamic, with composts, infusions and lunar cycles guiding all vineyard work. In the cellar, fermentation occurs with wild yeasts, extraction is gentle, and ageing takes place in

Stockinger foudres to preserve freshness.

The resulting wines combine Mediterranean fruit with fine tannins and lifted acidity, reflecting both Ester’s scientific precision and Carles’s intuitive craftsmanship.

Planètes de Nin Blanca Priorat, Nin Ortiz 2022

Ester and Carles Nin-Ortiz discovered the rare Cariñena Blanca (carignan blanc) by chance while working with old vines from Mas d’En Caçador. They re-grafted a plot in 2011 and expanded plantings to 1.4ha. Officially recognised by the Priorat DO in 2024, this once-experimental cuvée now defines the region’s white wines. Aged nine months in old barrels and concrete eggs, it shows ripe pear and quince, with a long, mineral, schist-marked finish.

Terra Vermella Penedes, Nin Ortiz 2021

From Pla de Manlleu (Alt Penedès), this comes from 1ha of 40–45-year-old Parellada Montonega vines on iron-rich terra rossa soils at 550m altitude. Whole bunches macerate for two days, then ferment and age 12 months on fine lees in barrels.

The result is vibrant and textural, with fresh curry leaf, gentle reduction, and refreshing bitters, a true “vi blanc de guarda”, or white wine for ageing.

Selma de Nin Penedes, Nin Ortiz

From Selma, a 750m-high limestone village in Alt Penedès and Ester’s birthplace, this 2007 project blends Roussanne, Marsanne, Parellada, Chenin Blanc. Vinified and aged like Terra Vermella, it shows greater power and texture, lifted by limestone-driven bitters, vibrant acidity, and subtle reduction.

A true wine for ageing, it’s bottle-aged two extra years before release.

Priorat Planètes de Nin Tinto, Nin Ortiz 2021

Finca Les Planetes spans 18ha at 450m, with 6.5ha of vines across varied slopes. Garnacha and Garnacha Peluda were terraced in 1999, while Cariñena (2008) follows the natural incline. After eleven vintages of refinement, Ester and Carles define this as their ‘classic’ Priorat: a blend of the three varieties, fermented and aged 18 months in 3,200L foudres to avoid oak influence.

The wine is elegant and savoury, with floral, spicy fruit, Mediterranean herbs, and an iron-tinged llicorella minerality.

Priorat Mas d’en Cacador Nit de Nin, Nin Ortiz 2021

From 2ha of 85–125-year-old north-facing vines at 650m in Mas d’En Caçador, one of Priorat’s highest and most iconic sites, this wine reflects Porrera’s cooler, breezier climate. Made from 100% whole bunches, it macerates four weeks and ages 17 months in old barrels.

Regularly ranked among Priorat’s top wines, it marries power and elegance, with succulent dark fruit, blood orange lift, and schist-clay minerality expressing the site’s enduring vitality.

Priorat La Coma d’en Romeu, Nin Ortiz 2019

La Coma d’en Romeu is a 1.5ha amphitheatre of 80+ year-old vines at 350m, a sun-drenched, biodiverse slope surrounded by forest and fruit trees. On 450-million-year-old silica-flecked llicorella, it’s among Priorat’s oldest soils.

Made from 100% whole bunches and aged 17 months in 600L barrels and Stockinger foudres, the wine is perfumed with wild herbs, flowers, and ripe peach, showing graphite, earth, and glycerol richness — a brooding, energetic expression of its unique terroir.

Priorat La Rodeda, Nin Ortiz

Ester Nin’s first vineyard, 0.45ha of 80+ year-old vines in La Rodeda (450m), lies just below Mas d’En Caçador. A pure garnacha peluda plot, it yields fresher, more rustic wines. Made from 100% whole bunches and aged in a single 228–300L barrel, only 300–400 bottles are produced yearly.

The wine is juicy yet structured, with seamless oak and remarkable concentration, an exceptionally rare, stunning cuvée.
