After their father's early retirement in 1989 due to health reasons, the brothers passionately elevated the domaine to become Saint-Joseph's top producer. They initially crafted wines in cramped cellars but built a new winemaking cave in 2002, still connected to an old cellar. Their vines thrive in the heart of the St-Joseph appellation on granite slopes in Mauves and Tournon. In 2004, they expanded by renting old vines in St-Jean-de-Muzols from Raymond Trollat, later acquiring 3ha from him, now a significant part of their primary red cuvée.

All red St-Joseph vines are 'sélection massale,' with no clones. They use horses for plowing when possible, like the Jura Comtois breed Samson. Yields are in the low 30hh range. After harvest, grapes undergo destemming (around 85%) and are directly conveyed into ancient wooden vats. Fermentation lasts 2-3 weeks with foot punching twice daily and daily remontage during cuvaison. Wines age for at least 12 months in demi-muids before bottling in late February with minimal sulfur.

A really beautiful dark, black cherry colour that extends right out to the edge, right from the start the class and elegance of the 2020 is evident.

The Gonon brothers use juice from their youngest vines in St-Joseph for this really good IGP, giving it less full bunch maceration than the classic St-Jo. The nose shows mulberries and raspberries, with some bacon fat, and the palate bears a concentrated heart after a bright attack, there’s evident freshness in this with mineral notes and iron, and finely grained, nicely integrated tannins. Spanning 10 hectares across 24 parcels in Gigondas, the domaine benefits from diverse soils, with 70% on the appellation’s high slopes, where sandy 'safre' soils lend finesse and ageing potential. Working organically for over 15 years (certified in 2020), Paul has embraced biodiversity and meticulous vineyard management, replacing syrah and mourvèdre with carignan, counoise, and cinsault to complement the estate’s 90% grenache-based wines.

In the cellar, Paul's approach focuses on gentle extraction, whole-bunch fermentation (20-60% depending on ripeness), and ageing in foudres and cement tanks. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered after 14-18 months, showcasing finesse and elegance in a region known for power. With his energy and vision, Paul is shaping Gour de Chaulé into one of the Rhône Valley’s standout domaines.

This comes from 24 parcels around the village, 70% from the hillsides and principally sandy soils (see profile) that confer a lot of finesse to the wine, and 30% from down the hill (around Santa Duc) on red clay that brings generosity and depth. With 30% whole bunches in 2021, it was vinified in cement, aged for 18 months (two-thirds in cement tanks and one-third in old foudres), then bottled unfined and unfiltered. There is a touch of reduction on the nose that soon wafts away – reduction is key for Paul who seeks to enhance a delicate 'touché de bouche', and one of the reasons why he much prefers cement to oak barrels. As ever, his touch is spot on – the nose is floral, herbal, and spicy with red fruits to the fore, the extraction is pitch-perfect with great balance and finesse, much more than you would expect from a Gigondas, and the fruit has a very pure and lifted quality. The 2022 vintage delivered ripe yet balanced whites in the Rhône, with concentration tempered by enough freshness to maintain definition and drinkability. The wine shows citrus peel, white peach and pear, alongside white flowers, fennel and a subtle saline mineral edge. Vinification is carried out with gentle pressing, fermentation in stainless steel and neutral vessels depending on parcel, followed by lees ageing to build texture while maintaining freshness and aromatic definition.

Producer Domaine de Lorient

Origin Saint-Péray, Ardèche,Northern Rhone, France

Grapes 66% Roussanne, 34% Marsanne

Vintage 2019/2020/2021/2022

Alcohol 13.5% ABV

Style Medium body natural white

Bottle size 750ml

Winemaking Manual harvest, gently pressed, fermented in barrels with indigenous yeast, 5% new oak up to 15yo, undergoes malolactic fermentation. In Cornas, the domaine sources fruit from small holdings spread across the steep granitic slopes of the appellation’s natural amphitheatre, predominantly mid to upper hillside sites where shallow decomposed granite soils dominate and naturally restrict vigour. These south and south east facing slopes are among the most extreme terroirs in the Northern Rhône, producing Syrah with natural concentration, firm structure and a distinctly mineral profile. The estate works in a relatively restrained style for Cornas, focusing on clarity of fruit and balance rather than overt extraction, with a cellar approach designed to preserve aromatic definition and composure.

2021 in the Northern Rhône was a more classical and cooler season, with lower yields, slower ripening and naturally higher acidity compared to recent warmer vintages. In Cornas this translated into wines where finesse and aromatic lift took priority over sheer density, with a greater emphasis on balance and tannin management during vinification. The Domaine de Lorient Cornas reflects this profile, showing a more restrained and finely tuned expression of the appellation. Fermentation is carried out in open top vats with gentle extraction adapted to the vintage, including partial whole cluster depending on parcel selection to enhance aromatic complexity and freshness. Elevage takes place in French oak barrels with a measured proportion of new oak, supporting structure without dominating the fruit. The wine shows black cherry, blackberry and dark plum, with violet florals, black pepper and a subtle smoked, savoury edge. The palate is dense but controlled, with firm yet refined tannins, fresh acidity and a long, linear finish that emphasises precision over raw power.

Origin France, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Grapes Syrah

Vintage 2021/2022

Alcohol 13.5%

Style Structured, precise, mineral

Bottle size 75cl

Winemaking Partial whole cluster fermentation depending on parcel and vintage, fermentation in open top vats with gentle extraction adapted to the cooler 2021 season, followed by élevage in French oak barrels with a moderate proportion of new oak, focused on balance, aromatic lift and structured finesse

Notes Sustainable Viticulture
